If you look like an apple or a pear right now and then you lose weight, you will just look like a thinner apple or pear. If you want a good shape you have to change your shape not just burn the fat off. The only way to do that is lift weight. The shape of your muscles determines your shape. Choose your muscles, increase the size and change the shape of your body.
Look at it another way.... We're hunter-gather's and we are designed to walk around, gather food and carry it back to home. We can replicate that by brisk walking and weight lifting. Doing sports isn't in our design and damages us. Do what comes naturally. Just how to go about it is another subject of controversy at the higher levels. In the beginning, everybody should just do the basics. Again, read and educate yourself. The best book for starting lifters is Bill Phillips Body-For-Life. It is a complete package: Motivation, Instruction, Feedback. Get the book, check out the website. One thing, Bill Phillips owns EAS supplement company so just ignore what he has to say about supplemants. That advice goes for all the sites I've listed. What it comes down to is lift three times a week for about an hour. On days inbetween lifts do 20 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training type cardio. That totals up to be a great big huge 4 hours a week. Less time than you spend watching TV and getting fat. To teach you how to lift is beyond the scope of this website.
