I see more knee pain here in Malaysia in one day than I saw in a month anywhere else I've ever practiced. The reason? Bad footwear. People are wearing "flip-flop" sandals or high heeled shoes or just shoes that are in such a sorry state that they should have been replaced a year ago.
The Kinetic Chain of the skeleton illustrates that all parts in the human body are connected. It's a big balancing act. If one part of the body doesn't move correctly, other parts are affected. If the feet don't move right, everything doesn't move right to some degree. The diagram on the right illustrates what happens when the foot pronates. Pronation comes from either a flat foot or bad foot wear and it is made worse by walking on hard surfaces. Pronation results in the knee wearing down. On an x-ray this shows as uneven space between the sides of the knee joint. How to fix or better yet, prevent this problem? |

This x-ray shows a very damaged knee. Look and see how the bone is touching the bone on the right side of the knee joint. This knee is so far gone that it requires total replacement by a surgeon. This could have been prevented by wearing orthotics in the shoes. |

This explains how a knee becomes damaged. First the foot is pronated or rolled in. This can be genetic. If you look down at your foot it may look normal but when walking it rolls inwards. Pronation causes internal tibial rotation which causes the knee to move incorrectly. This causes wear on the knee. It also causes the muscles connected to the knee to become damaged. This will cause the knee to wear out even faster. Orthotics prevents all of this. |
